40 Powerful Morning Routine Ideas For More Energy

Do you ever wake up excited to whisk your first cup of matcha while listening to positive affirmations on your meditation app?

Yeah, me neither.

I’ve never been a morning person and it doesn’t matter how early I wake up. Whether it’s at 5 am with an alarm or 10 am on a holiday, I’m always groggy and slow to get going.

But I’ve finally found a morning routine that works for me – after years of trying (and failing) to follow all the different routines that lifestyle gurus swear by.

I still sometimes wake up confused, then spend a half hour replying to non-urgent messages and scrolling Instagram Reels before I rush to start the day.

And when that happens, I know the rest of my day will be difficult. Because I’ve already had that intense dopamine hit from my phone that reduces any natural drive.

When those bad days arrive (like they always do, because nobody is perfect), I know my sluggishness can be traced right back to my chaotic morning.

A good morning routine makes a huge impact on your whole day – and on your entire life. Your mornings send ripple effects that impact your confidence, your happiness, your career and your relationships.

Feeling anxious at work? It’s probably because you drank two cups of coffee on an empty stomach. Feeling unmotivated for that next big project? It’s probably because you haven’t journaled in awhile and you’ve lost track of your priorities.

So how do you craft that perfect morning routine that fits your life? What morning habits work best to boost your energy and improve your productivity?

Here’s my advice:

  • Keep it simple. Don’t try to pack in too much, unless you’re prepared to wake up 2 hours earlier. Yoga, meditation, journaling, positive affirmations and reading are all incredible morning habits. But you can’t do them all at once.
  • Keep it consistent. Don’t rely on inspiration. Integrate your new healthy morning habits into your already existing routines by using habit stacking. For example: listen to positive affirmations while you eat breakfast. Create a healthy morning routine that’s just as automatic as brushing your teeth.
  • Experiment. Try 5 minutes of gratitude journaling in the morning and observe how it impacts your day. Listen to a guided meditation as you’re walking your dog. Try a few different morning routine habits and see which ones make you feel best. Remember that what works for others won’t always work for you.
  • Be prepared. Make your mornings easier by prepping the night before. It’s such a sweet feeling to wake up and see your workout clothes laundered, folded and ready to go on your bedroom table. It’s great to see your lunch packed and your water bottle already filled in the fridge.
  • Wake up earlier. If you’re always rushing through your morning, then determine how much time you need and set the alarm accordingly. Go to bed earlier if you want a more leisurely morning routine.

Morning routine ideas

1. Savor your coffee (or tea). Don’t gulp it down and then forget how many cups you’ve had already. But really slow down and appreciate the taste and scent of each sip. Your morning coffee time is also a great window to add in a new healthy habit like gratitude journaling or stretching.

2. Drink some water first. Avoid coffee on an empty stomach because it triggers cortisol, stress and anxiety (and you don’t need any more of that in the morning). Down a small glass of water and take a quick bite of something before you make your coffee.

3. Get some sun. Drink your coffee in the garden or on your balcony for a dose of fresh air and sunshine to start your day. Sunlight in the morning regulates your circadian rhythm (and lets your body know the day has begun). It also lowers anxiety, helps you feel more awake and boosts your energy and focus.

4. Dress for the day’s energy. Instead of throwing on whatever’s at the front of your closet, take a moment to intentionally choose some items that reflect the energy you want to cultivate that day (like a red necklace for confidence or a blue sweater for serenity).

5. Do a household chore. Give yourself a little healthy dopamine hit by decluttering the kitchen counter or doing a load of laundry.

6. Hum along to some music. The vibrations of humming help you calm and center yourself.

7. Bake a sweet treat. Pop some simple bread rolls or muffins into the oven as you shower and prepare for the day.

8. Dab on some of your best perfume. Don’t wait for a special occasion to enjoy those fragrances gathering dust on your shelves. A whif of scent is a beautiful and mood-lifting start to your day.

9. Light a scented candle or diffuser. Turn your morning routine into an indulgent ritual by lighting a scented candle or diffuser to lift your spirits. Bonus points for using seasonal scents like cherry blossom for spring and pumpkin spice for fall.

10. Listen to a calming playlist. Whether it’s rustic folk or baroque, create a morning playlist of music that boosts your mood and makes you excited to face the day.

For your body

11. Do some slow yoga stretches. Some feel-good stretches gently loosen your stiff muscles and joints after hours of sleep. And yoga stretches boost your energy and get our blood flowing – without the pressures of jarring, high-intensity exercise.

12. Eat a balanced breakfast. A good breakfast usually includes protein, complex carbs (like whole grain bread), healthy fats and fruits and veggies. If you’re not a morning person, prepare some ingredients (like hardboiled eggs) the night before. Need inspiration? Try a spinach omelet with toast or Greek yogurt layered with berries, granola and nuts.

13. Take a few deep breaths. Many breathwork techniques like slow and deep exhales lower your stress and reduce anxiety. Your breaths are shallower during sleep, so deep breathing in the morning floods your body with energizing oxygen. Download an app like Insight Timer for some great guided breathwork sessions.

14. Take a walk. Get your blood flowing and fill your lungs with fresh air to reinvigorate your body and shake off morning grogginess. Walking also makes you appreciate your neighborhood and meet your neighbors.

15. Move your body. Take a few moments to move your body in a way that feels nourishing and joyful – whether that’s ballet stretches, a bit of tai chi or a short weight lifting session.

16. Take an invigorating shower. Use a refreshing scrub and some essential oils like citrus or mint to boost your energy levels.

17. Do a refreshing face mask. Slather on a face mask in the morning for some extra self-care, and leave it on while you make breakfast or do some morning journaling. A face or eye mask gives you a dose of confidence for the day ahead.

18. Take your vitamins. Boost your mood with some Vitamin D, or take some magnesium to reduce stress and anxiety. Taking a vitamin first thing is a quick and easy way to reinforce your commitment to taking care of your body.

19. Massage your earlobes. This simple, calming technique stimulates blood flow and relieves stress and anxiety. The earlobes contain numerous nerve endings that trigger endorphins (the body’s feel-good hormones) when they’re massaged.

20. Relax your facial muscles. Consciously release each of your facial muscle groups one by one – from your forehead, eyes and jaw to your mouth. Tension often accumulates there during sleep and rarely gets noticed.

For your mind

21. Stay off social media (no, not even just 5 minutes to quickly check your messages). Avoid social media entirely in the morning and it’s going to change your life. Scrolling social media in the morning causes a dopamine spike that lowers your energy and motivation for the whole rest of the day. It’s not worth it. Do a digital detox that actually sticks to start controlling your screentime.

22. Make a to-do list. If you have a lot of things going through your head, then jot them all down on paper to clear your mind. Afraid that you’re forgetting something? A quick to-do list makes you instantly feel more put-together.

23. Make your bed. Don’t skip this small and easy task. Do it right after you wake up for an instant hit of healthy dopamine that gives you a sense of accomplishment. Completing a small task first thing in the morning boosts your productivity for the rest of the day.

24. Make a bullet list of your top 3 priorities for the day. If you’re feeling disorganized and overwhelmed, then write a quick list of priorities to clear your head and focus on what truly matters. Start a bullet journal for one convenient place to organize all your lists.

25. Draw a quick sketch. If you struggle with perfectionism, there’s nothing like a sloppy, improvised sketch in your morning journal to help quiet your inner critic.

26. Read a short nature poem or haiku. Find a brief poem about nature and read it slowly to savor the language. Download an app that spotlights a different poem each day to add a short burst of literature to your morning.

27. Flip through a print magazine. Swap out that 20 minutes of doomscrolling for some old-fashioned magazine browsing. Read a short article to start your day or just let some beautiful imagery inspire you.

28. Do a crossword puzzle. Give your brain a gentle warm-up by doing a crossword puzzle over your morning coffee. Set your phone aside and spend a few minutes with a crossword instead to retrain your attention span and sharpen your focus.

29. Tidy a small area. A quick declutter helps to clear your living space and instantly lowers your stress and anxiety. It also gives you a small sense of accomplishment to start the day.

30. Read. Spent 10-15 minutes re-reading your favorite self-improvement book or a chapter from the latest fantasy romance. Use these tips to start reading more books in your everyday life.

For your spirit

Several journals lay open on a wooden desk in golden light..

31. Write down 3 things you’re grateful for. Describe these things in detail using all your senses and let yourself really feel the emotion of gratitude. Gratitude is one of the easiest and fastest ways to lower stress and rewire your brain towards positivity. Start with these gratitude journal prompts to get writing.

32. Do some positive affirmations. Write a list of encouraging and supportive affirmations that you really need to hear right now. Or listen to some guided positive affirmations on a meditation app. If you’re struggling with negative self-talk, then repeating positive beliefs to yourself will give you that much-needed confidence boost.

33. Write freely for 15 minutes. Do a brain dump before you start the day to release pent-up emotions and let yourself vent. Set a timer and start writing about whatever comes to your mind. And don’t stop until time’s up.

34. Compliment a loved one. Start your day on a glowing note and pay a compliment to a loved one, a coworker or a random stranger. Your kind words strengthen relationships and create a positive ripple effect.

35. Say good morning to your pets. The simple act of petting your dog or cat has been scientifically shown to lower cortisol levels and combat feelings of loneliness.

36. Meditate. You don’t have to sit still in the lotus position, either. Listen to a guided meditation or take a few mindful breaths while brewing your coffee to start. Meditation in the mornings has a plethora of benefits, from reducing anxiety to sharpening your focus.

37. Listen to an inspiring podcast. If you’re struggling to get motivated then listen to a podcast that will help you reignite your passion for life. Podcasts are especially helpful if you don’t have a strong support network in real life and you need to hear some encouraging voices. Listen as you’re making breakfast or exercising.

38. Visualize your perfect day. If you’re feeling stressed or nervous about an upcoming event, visualize how the best version of yourself would rise up to meet the challenge.

39. Write about one thing you’re looking forward to. Whether it’s a cup of coffee on your lunch break or a sunset walk, describe one pleasurable event you’re looking forward to on your calendar. Savor the anticipation and allow yourself to feel gratitude for the experience.

40. Write in a dream journal. Record your dreams right after you wake up to unlock your subconscious life and process your emotions. Learn to analyze your dreams and dedicate a separate notebook to log all your dreams and recognize any patterns.
